If you’ll soon be traveling abroad, whether on business or strictly for your own pleasure, there are a few handy tips that you should keep in mind. If you have never been abroad, or perhaps no farther than Canada, you may not be as aware as you think you are that the world outside of the United States is a very different place. Of course, people are people, and many things will stay the same. But there are quite a few other things that differ radically.

It’s A Different World Outside the U.S. Border

You’re surely aware that different rules and customs apply in other parts of the world but, until you’ve really been outside the borders of America, you may not really have a clear conception of just how different things are. For example, if you’re not used to carrying your passport around on your person at all times, as well as a complete set of personal identification papers, you may be in for quite a shock when you are asked to produce them on multiple occasions throughout the course of a single day.

Travel Right By Traveling Light

If you’re soon going to be traveling abroad, especially by airplane, then it’s an excellent idea to keep in mind the fact that baggage handling claims on almost all major airlines have recently risen through the roof. As a result, it’s imperative that you travel as lightly as possible. Try to restrict your total amount of baggage to a single suitcase and one carry on flight bag. You’ll save a great deal of money by traveling with fewer luggage.

Have All Your Paperwork in Order

As noted above, it’s also a very good idea to have your passport and identification papers on your person at all times. If you should get lost, or robbed, during your stay in another country, you’ll need them to prove to the authorities that you are who you say you are.

The Internet Has Changed the Way We Shop

The convenience and accessibility of the Internet has truly revolutionized the way that we do just about everything that is possible for us to do. Perhaps the most radical change has come in the way that we do business. For example, in the old days, travel arrangements used to be made over the telephone, thanks to a number that was found in the Yellow Pages. Today, the Yellow Pages are a thing of the past, and business is done using the Internet.

And while making a phone call directly to Lufthansa used to cost an arm and a leg in long distance charges, today a connection is made for free, over the Internet, in crystal clear quality, and in a fraction of the time.

Get Hip to the Hipmunk One Stop Shop

If you’re searching for affordable hotels in Rome, or any other part of the world, you’ll want to hear an about excellent website that really does seem to have cornered the market on affordable deals for every occasion. For example, if you’re looking for cheap hotel rooms, airline tickets, or an all-inclusive travel package, you can find all of the above and more at the Hipmunk site. No matter what your budget may be, there’s a price and a room that is bound to be just what the doctor ordered.

This post was provided by Fiona Moriarty of Hipmunk, a travel website that helps you to locate the best deals on transportation, accommodations, and more.

Assuming we can ever stop having major bills long enough to save for it, I really want to take my husband to London for a couple of weeks. I think he’d get a real kick out of it. Hopefully, I’ll still remember Hipmunk by then.

These are all great tips! I went to Ireland for a month a few years back and it was amazing but a lot of research and preparation on my part. It’s so much easier and safer to travel abroad when you have an idea of what to expect and how to prepare.

Agreed. When we were in Mexico getting ready to board our flight back, there was a girl who didn’t know you were supposed to keep your tourist visa so she had thrown it away. She wasn’t allowed to leave the country. Knowing things like that are well worth the time it takes to research!

These are helpful tips to ponder on especially to people who love to travel just like me. While it is true that it is quite exciting to explore the world, there are some valuable things you also have to think about aside from enjoyment and leisure.
