Another Way to Cut the Cable

I know, I’ve been pimping out Republic Wireless a lot lately.  I can’t help it.  I blog about ways to save money, and they offer a ton of them.  I feel like a jerk when I know about some of these deals and don’t let you all know about them, so how could I not?

Right now they have a pretty sweet promo going on:  when you add a line or start a new one, purchasing a Moto X, you get a free Google Chromecast.  It’s a little USB stick that you plug into your TV so you can display whatever you’re seeing on your phone or computer on the television.

For example, we have Netflix.  We use it through our PS3, because we already have a PS3.  If you’re thinking about cutting the cable and don’t have a device that allows you access subscription services (like Netflix, Hulu, HBOgo, etc,) then the Chromecast does the trick.

Back in the day (circa 2007,) I watched the entirety of Lost up to that point by hooking up an HDMI cable to my PC and streaming it off of ABC’s website for free.  You can still do this with most recent episodes, or in rare cases, entire shows, by going to the network’s website.  For example, today you could catch up on some Modern Family, sans the pain-in-the-butt HDMI cable set up.  You’d just plug your Chromecast in, follow the instructions, and it will be synced up with your phone or laptop as long as they’re on the same WiFi connection. You’re essentially using your phone or laptop like a remote.

If you’ve been thinking about switching to Republic because of their affordable phone plans, this might be a great opportunity to take the plunge.  When you purchase the standard black or white MotoX, you get that free Chromecast which can significantly cut the cable bill.  As an affiliate, I also get to pass on a $20 savings on your first service bill (which equals either an entire month of service free or dang near close) if you order through this link.

I’ve been less enamored with my phone lately, but can’t pull the trigger on moving to Republic Wireless. We only pay $10 or $5 a month with PTel, so unfortunately it’s one of those rare instances where we’d be paying more. 🙁 I suppose I could go to the wifi only plan, but I really like the flexibility of being able to use a little data, or actually make a call, when I’m out and about.

Still, that bonus with the Chromecast is fantastic. For frugal folks, it’s a really good perk.

Yeah $25 would be a jump up in that case. You can change your plan 2x every month, but I still don’t know of that would be cheaper for you. Free international service with WiFi tho!

And it is…thinking about pulling the trigger early on getting my husband the phone. He’s still got a couple months left on the contract, though.

The Google Chromecast is hands-down the best device ever conceived by anyone ever! It’s only 35 dollars/euros, you plug it in, you connect it to your phone and you’re all set!

I believe there’s currently a three month promotion for free Google Music All-Access for US citizens, so be sure to check that out as well.

    Cheers,

Oh, that’s awesome info! Now I’m wondering if you can combine the two promos…off to research!

This is awesome! I’m going to check it out. We don’t have cable, but we are planning to get Net Flix soon.

So. Many. TV. Shows. This is a much cheaper alternative to most of the systems you have to buy to utilize it, too!

I’ve been keeping my eye on Republic Wireless and was planning on making the switch when I needed a new phone. But that is a pretty good incentive to switch now! Need to look into this further

We cut the cable as well and have started streaming. While we don’t have Chromcast I have heard a lot of good things about it. Currently we stream through Amazon Fire TV and before that we used our Wii system.

I hear you…we’ll use our PS3 till it dies. But definitely doing Chromecast whenever that happens. I’m so over HDMI cables. 🙂

You totally should. The phone cost up front looks intimidating, but there are 2 options/price levels. I have the MotoX, but I think husband is gonna do Moto G. Make up for the phone costs soooo quick with the crazy low monthly bills.

I have been hearing some really great things about Republic Wireless, so I really need to bite them bullet and check it out. Do you know off the top of your head if they accept iPhones? I sound like a snob, but I LOVE my iPhone (and I use it for work).

They do not! 🙁 Something techy about iOS and programming. You have to buy either a Moto X or Moto G through them.
